The Site of the world's first Private Space Program was in the Central African Republic of Zaire!
Переглядів 2,8 тис.3 роки тому
It's a little known fact that there was once a time when a central african country, known today as the Democratic Republic of the Congo or #Congo DRC was a testing and launching site for rockets meant to carry satellites and humans into space. In fact the Congo, then the republic of #Zaire was the site of the world's very first private space program. It was Lutz Kayser, a gifted engineer from G...

Gustav Holst - VII. Neptune: The Mystic (The Planets)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.4 роки тому
The final planet in Holst’s suite and in our solar system is Neptune, where temperatures hit 350 degrees below zero [Fahrenheit] and icy winds blow at 900 miles an hour, more than five times the speed of a Category 5 hurricane. Its atmosphere swirls with intense storms, including Great Dark Spots, akin to Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. “The Mystic” was mysterious indeed when Holst penned the piece. ...
Gustav Holst - VI. Uranus: The Magician (The Planets)
Переглядів 9354 роки тому
Uranus is Holst’s magician. True to form, this hazy ice giant has more than one magic trick up its sleeves. Uranus is so dim in Earth’s night sky that it hid more or less in plain sight for thousands of years. Not until 1781 did we identify it as a planet. Even then, Uranus still had tricks to share. Rings were discovered by chance almost 200 years later. These tenuous “now you see them, now yo...
Gustav Holst - V. Saturn: The Bringer of Old Age (The Planets)
Переглядів 2,1 тис.4 роки тому
In ancient times, long before the advent of telescopes, Saturn was the most distant planet known. In the Roman pantheon, Saturn was a god of time, which connects well to Holst’s movement, “The Bringer of Old Age.” In truth, Saturn is the same age as every other planet in our solar system, 4.5 billion years or so. Its most striking feature by far is its ring system. From a distance they appear s...
Gustav Holst - IV. Jupiter: The Bringer of Jolity (The Planets)
Переглядів 8094 роки тому
The gas giant Jupiter is our solar system’s most massive world (more than twice all the others put together). Its Great Red Spot is a swirling maelstrom - bigger than Earth - that has raged on for at least 150 years, and perhaps much, much longer. Jupiter is “the bringer of jollity” in Holst’s envisioning. This heavyweight world brings scientists so much joy in part because it has one of the be...
Gustav Holst - III. Mercury: The Winged Messenger (The Planets)
Переглядів 9584 роки тому
Appropriately, Mercury is the “Winged Messenger.” The smallest planet in our solar system zips around the Sun closer than any other. Mercury completes a full circuit in its orbital relay race every 88 days, at varying speeds around 100,000 miles an hour. At first glance, this tiny rock may look rather dull, but as we’ve learned, Mercury has a lot to say. Despite how close it is to the Sun, ther...
Gustav Holst - II. Venus: The Bringer of Peace (The Planets)
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 роки тому
Holst casts Venus, the Roman goddess of love, as the “bringer of peace” in this soothing and beguiling movement. Venus is about the same size as Earth, but closer to the sun. Fanciful depictions in the past of its surface portrayed a balmy paradise, and Venus is indeed our warmest planet. But under a planet-wide shroud of highly reflective clouds is a climate that has evolved very differently t...
Gustav Holst - I. Mars: The Bringer of War (The Planets)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 роки тому
Most of Earth’s planetary neighbors have been known for thousands of years, but for much of that time, they were not much more than wandering points of light that moved predictably through the sky. When Holst composed his “Planets” suite a century ago, the best telescopes of the time were only just beginning to reveal the true nature of the planets. Holst drew his inspiration from Roman myth, n...
'Wow Signal' - Official Trailer (2019)

On a late summer evening in 1977, Ohio radio astronomers discovered a strong, interstellar signal that is believed by many to be the best evidence of communication from an extraterrestrial civilization. Famously known as the ‘Wow! Signal’, its origins remain a mystery, and continue to intrigue. In today’s ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence, there are those who think the Wow! Signa...
The Planets - Uranus And Neptune (Musical)
Переглядів 7244 роки тому
The interiors of Uranus and Neptune are almost identical, due to the fact they are similar in mass and size. Both have rocky cores like Jupiter and Saturn. But at that point the similarity ends. The pressures are never sufficient to convert molecular hydrogen to metallic hydrogen in the interiors of Uranus and Neptune. Instead, a large mantle of icy water and ammonia forms about 20,000 km below...

UK. What a fantastic achievement. At 10,000 feet, breathing is a problem those men have guts. ? This is going to sound very silly, but I can relate to this and Hubble, but the James Web seems a bit 'boring'. Sorry about that. Sad to see Hubble slowly dying, come on Musk, DO IT.

I don’t understand why this was chosen to be representative of earth and it’s inhabitants a bunch of monkey sounds and just totally random sounds and pictures of horrible drawings of five different animals that live on earth maybe put some art on there I think they forgot to include Civilized Asians and military war, government, religion and computers and pornography, and maybe a car factory and instead of all those sounds maybe play some Beatles or Pink Floyd and if you wanna put science in math on there, why don’t you include biology include viruses microbiology well, I guess they did have some Ethiopian tribal type people. They probably got the AIDS. I on the behalf of the people of earth I am embarrassed.

Ya know, The Russians had a lot of firsts. But, the American space program was MUCH more intense as far as technology and overall performance of the spacecrafts. We might have fell behind for awhile but the things we did in space and HOW we did them was much more significant.. It's like comparing a Cadillac to a Volkswagen Beetle..
